The Aarhus-born photographer Petra Kleis is as of today exhibiting in the Copenhagen department store Illum with the series “Bugs”. The exhibition expresses a fascination of the animal by investigating the strong feelings most people seem to associate with this animal group – feelings such as fear, irritation or interest.

With a hard flash and loads of colors, the exhibition shows a variety of insects who all suffered the destiny of being killed by humans.

The exhibition opens today and runs until the end of April.

10 years ago Danish Kim Grenaa and Uffe Buchard launched the international fashion and lifestyle magazine DANSK Magazin, to create a platform for and to promote Danish fashion abroad. In the last 10 years the magazine has established itself on the international market and is today published twice a year and distributed on six continents.

In collaboration with Danish Design Centre the two magazine founders have curated this exhibition to provide the audience with a walk-through of the history Danish fashion has gone through in the last decade.

Until March 18th it’s possible to experience Gambia through the eyes of three generations of Gambian women as part of the exhibition “Even now to explain everything would be difficult” at Fotografisk Center.

The Danish artist Gitte Villesen is mainly known for her videos, but is currently exhibiting the project ” I Will Arrange Everything. It Will Be the Best Film Ever”, which consists of three video projections in a staged installation. The project is carried out in collaboration with camera man Jonas Mortensen and Gambian Amadou Sarr, who gets to play an active role in the project, as the three projections are based on women in his life; his third wife Mariama Senghor, her mother Mariama Corr and her grandmother Yenden Joff. Through conversations with these women, we get to see what it’s like to be a woman in a country where magic plays an essential part and the gender roles are far from what we’re used to.

Besides “I Will Arrange Everything. It Will Be the Best Film Ever” three of Villesen’s previous projects “A Silent Movie” (2007), “Script for a Silent Movie” (2006) and “Kitchen etc” (2006) are available as part of this current exhibition.

The exhibition opened January 21st and runs until March 18th.

The world champion of the photography’s equivalent to extreme sports is visiting Denmark.

German Andreas Gursky, who last year set the record, by selling the photo Rhine II for over 2 million pounds, is now exhibiting 45 giant photos at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.

On first hand, Gursky’s photo might appear as the aesthetic perfection or even as the perfect picture, but if you step a little closer, you will notice discrepancies – it doesn’t really seem like the actual reality. Gursky is most of the time in, what can be called, an area, which boarders between photography and painting. All of Gursky’s photos are not just simple, lightly edited photos, as we know from some of the classical genres of photography. Most of his photos consist of several photos mixed and matched, edited and manipulated. It is therefore not just photography nor painting, but more like a whole new reality – a reality, the human eye simply wasn’t able to detect.

It is not only the convergence of all the photos, which is the reason for Gursky’s photos being called the photography’s equivalent to extreme sports, it is also the subject and its surroundings as well as the often extreme angles from where the photos are shot.

The exhibition opened January 13th and runs until May 13th – and is one of this year’s must sees!

When the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 filled the sky over Europe with volcanic ashes, it soon became an eyeopener for Danish Mette Bersang and British Kathrine Marquis, when they realized the effect of the lack of airplanes in the sky. With this newfound insight the two artists got together to explore the epochal airborne transportation vehicle.

The exhibition does not only explore the airplane, with its physically shape, size and form but also its surroundings – the skies. With the cancellation of all air traffic during Eyjafjallajökull’s outbreak, all the long, white, vaporized trails of the airplane – a phenomenon we’re so used to today, but rarely give any thought about, suddenly went missing. It is through these elements Bersang and Marquis explore and try to map the airplane, its surroundings and its journey, all in beautiful and poetic photography, drawing and various print making techniques.

Exhibition runs from January 28th – February 4th 2012

From November 25th 2011, the Greenlandic artist Julie Edel Hardenberg is showing an exhibition about Western stereotypes with a Greenlandic point of view.

In a time where the distance to a society bound by tradition is increasing, the differences between those who work in the traditional professions and those who has stepped into the ever-changing, modern society are rapidly appearing. The difference and distance between these worlds, is Hardenberg’s subject in the exhibition Sapiitsut/Heroes.

As a native Greenlander, Hardenberg has seen and experienced this distancing, and a big part of her previous works have been about the Greenlandic identity and Greenlanders’ understanding of themselves. This is expressed in the exhibition by staging the citizens of Nuuk as movie stars on fictional film posters. The posters, which are created in cooperation with photographer Lars Frederik Anders, are a way to focus on the increasing role, Western culture has in Greenland as well as in the daily life of its citizens.

Tonight the visitors at this year’s Culture Night will be able to dig into art – and dirt.

For tonight’s Culture Night, Museum of Copenhagen has arranged a variety of different and exciting events for the whole family. The events include everything from workshops in recycling and urban photo safari to archaeological studies, and can all be experienced at the museum as well as in the streets.

At the City Hall Square you will be able to flip through the 150.000 pictures of Copenhagen, which are exhibited at The Wall in the middle of the square. Just behind The Wall it’s hard not to notice the huge archeological excavation, where you will be able to see and hear the archeologists tell about their work on the excavation site.

From the City Hall Square you will have the opportunity to join the urban photo safaris, where you, in the company of a professional photographer, will be able to rexplore the old capital through the lens of your camera. All the safaris end at the Museum of Copenhagen, where artist and designer Jeremy Walton is hosting a workshop on how to use the things we otherwise would just have thrown out.

During this year’s Culture Night, the photo collective 16tyve will be showing photos from all around the world.

With a mixture of commercial photographers and photojournalists, the photographers at 16tyve have chosen to host an exhibition with 14 international photographers. Among the exhibited photographers are some of the photographers who participated in this year’s photo festival including Maria Fonfara, depicting the often tabooed subject of love and sexuality amongst the elderly and Mette Frandsen with the raw black and white series “Sin City” about the almost Quentin Tarantino-like universe in Las Vegas.
Also participating in this exhibition is Peter Dench (UK) with his series “England Uncensured” – a story about a people, who aren’t known for their great cuisine nor their great sense of fashion.
The American photographer Darcy Padilla is exhibiting the series “Julie” about a girl, who’s had to overcome more obstacles in her short life, than most people would dare to imagine.
“Zona Sibirian Prison Camps” is a series presented by the Belgian photographer Carl De Keyzer. The series shows the reality De Keyzer was allowed to portray on his journey around the Sibirian prison camps, a reality strictly guarded by the military.

The photographers:
Brenda Ann Keanally (US), Carl De Keyzer (B), Darcy Padilla (US), Fernando Moleres (E), Ingo Arndt (D), Maria Fonfara (DK), Peter Dench (UK), Martin Schoeller (D), Brian Skerry (US), Mette Frandsen (DK), Yuri Kozyrev (RUS), Thomas Nielsen (DK), Wim De Schamphelaere (B), Carolyn Drake (US)

In Odense, Eva Koch is creating curiosity with the exhibition “June’s Lace” with buildings dressed in lace curtains.

At Museet for Fotokunst BRANDTS in Odense you’re now able to experience the Danish artist Eva Koch’s exhibition “June’s Lace” with projections of light and mystifying lace curtains. In the historical premises of the old fabric factory, the constant movement of the video piece and the continuous sounds of weaving machines create a beautiful reference to the history of the museum, as if the exhibition was a ghost wandering the old factory halls. Koch is not held back by the walls of the museum, as she through a window in the old factory projects yet another seductive lace curtain on the raw wall of the next-door building.

The Danish Magnum photographer Jacob Aue Sobol will until Sunday be exhibiting at Fotografisk Center with the highly acclaimed exhibition “Stories”.

Jacob Aue Sobol is known for his series of black and white documentary photos, that with an almost snapshot-like expression become visual stories, which also applies to this exhibition. A selection of photos from previous series tell some of Sobol’s stories from Bangkok and Tokyo as well as from Denmark and Greenland.

In the series “Beneath the Roses”, photographer Gregory Crewdson stages the idyllic American suburb with a sense of melancholic tranquility.

The National Museum of Photography is hosting an exhibition by the American photographer Gregory Crewdson. The exhibition contains three of Crewdson’s series, each of them carried out in a beautiful but solitary imagery.
In the series “Beneath the Roses”, the ideals of the American family are portrayed with an almost cinematic composition of scenery and characters – characters loaded with a claustrophobic sense of yearning and desire. The desire is equally obvious in the black and white series “Fireflies”, where Crewdson is able to create a feeling of peaceful yet tense desire with the light from the mating ritual of fireflies.
In the third series of the exhibition “Sanctuary”, Crewdson has been to the Italian village Cincittà and documented the abandoned movie sets with a unique beauty.

Multiplicity and tolerance are the keywords behind photographer Klaus Thymann’s exhibition about the Danish freetown Christiania – a city within a city.

With a focus on the anarchistic architecture of Christiania, Thymann shows, that even a small town like Copenhagen is able to have another layer. The goal behind the exhibition is to create a time capsule. Without the use of digital aid, Thymann has created a photographic documentary of a city within the city before it’s absorbed through normalization.

In the exhibition Endings, the Danish photographer Nicolai Howalt examines society’s view on death anno 2011.

Through a study of the leftover ashes of the human cremation, Howalt is liberating death from the cultural, religious and social context. In the six large-sized and six smaller photos, this dust of death is transformed into abstract landscapes, which in their own unique texture create a characteristic whole.

Here and Now

The exhibition takes you on a journey to Spain. One photographer takes you to bullfighting, another one shows you the typical Spanish woman or invites you to visit the family …

14 Spanish documentary photographers give us a unique insight into contemporary Spain. An honest look. The exhibition allows us to stand in the footsteps of the photographers seeing the society from a personal perspective.

Each photographer show us a fraction of Spain, together they form a whole. We take a look into the society from ankles that the ordinary tourist will never experience. We see Spain through the eyes of Spain.

It is recommendable to take the two floor travel all the way to Spain.

Here and Now is exhibited in Ny Carlsberg Bryghus.
