Flight Paths
When the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 filled the sky over Europe with volcanic ashes, it soon became an eyeopener for Danish Mette Bersang and British Kathrine Marquis, when they realized the effect of the lack of airplanes in the sky. With this newfound insight the two artists got together to explore the epochal airborne transportation vehicle.
The exhibition does not only explore the airplane, with its physically shape, size and form but also its surroundings – the skies. With the cancellation of all air traffic during Eyjafjallajökull’s outbreak, all the long, white, vaporized trails of the airplane – a phenomenon we’re so used to today, but rarely give any thought about, suddenly went missing. It is through these elements Bersang and Marquis explore and try to map the airplane, its surroundings and its journey, all in beautiful and poetic photography, drawing and various print making techniques.
Exhibition runs from January 28th – February 4th 2012
