Sapiitsut/Heroes

Photo: Julie Edel Hardenberg and Lars Frederik Andersen
From November 25th 2011, the Greenlandic artist Julie Edel Hardenberg is showing an exhibition about Western stereotypes with a Greenlandic point of view.
In a time where the distance to a society bound by tradition is increasing, the differences between those who work in the traditional professions and those who has stepped into the ever-changing, modern society are rapidly appearing. The difference and distance between these worlds, is Hardenberg’s subject in the exhibition Sapiitsut/Heroes.
As a native Greenlander, Hardenberg has seen and experienced this distancing, and a big part of her previous works have been about the Greenlandic identity and Greenlanders’ understanding of themselves. This is expressed in the exhibition by staging the citizens of Nuuk as movie stars on fictional film posters. The posters, which are created in cooperation with photographer Lars Frederik Anders, are a way to focus on the increasing role, Western culture has in Greenland as well as in the daily life of its citizens.
